All the Necessary Tools and Materials

Before we dive into how to install a sliding patio door, it’s crucial to have all the necessary tools and materials on hand. Some of the essential items you’ll need include:

  • Impact drill
  • Cordless hammer drill
  • Six foot spirit level
  • A tape measure
  • Glazing adhesive
  • Double-sided 2mm glazing tape
  • 8mm HSS drillbit
  • Appropriate fixings
  • A range of glazing packers

Ensuring you have these items readily available will save you time and frustration during the installation.

Step 1 – Inspect the Opening

Begin by removing the existing door and inspecting the opening where the new doors will be installed. Measure the doors to ensure they fit properly within the door frame, allowing for a 15mm gap in both width and height to accommodate proper leveling.

Step 2 – Prepare for Door Installation

Ensure the door sill is level. Accurate measurements and thorough space assessment are crucial to ensure the sliding door fits perfectly during installation. If needed, use glazing packers to adjust the level. Before installation, glue the sill end caps to prevent water leakage. Apply adhesive around the edges and snap the caps into place, ensuring they are oriented correctly. If a sill is required, place it on top of the glazing packers.

Step 4 – Secure the Door Frame in Place

Carefully place the frame into the opening, ensuring that the glazing packers at the base remain undisturbed. Use pumps, wedges, or additional packers to temporarily hold the frame in place. Check that the frame is level and plumb using a spirit level or, for greater accuracy, a laser level.

Step 4 – Secure the Door in Place

Fix the door into position using the appropriate fixings, spacing them at 400mm intervals along both sides. Use glazing packers as needed to prevent frame distortion and avoid overtightening the fixings. Ensure the locking side is plumb and level, making adjustments, if necessary, then secure the head and bottom rail to complete the installation.

Step 5 – Install the Sliding Glass Door Units

Remove all glazing beads from the frame, noting their original positions. Place 5mm glazing packers at the bottom of each panel. Apply glazing silicone to the internal rebate of the interlocking side to prevent frame flexing. Insert the glass unit into the interlocking pocket, then replace the top bead, securing it with a 5mm glazing packer. Repeat for the remaining beads.

Sliding patio doors offer significant benefits, such as space-saving features and enhanced security when installed correctly.

When installing the sliding doors, lock the door in place, remove the handle, and apply glazing silicone to the interlocking section’s inside rebate. Position the glass by inserting it into the interlocking jamb pocket and twisting it into place. Reattach the handle, ensuring the screws are not overtightened.

Using the same technique, install the top and bottom beads for the other panels, adjusting the door to ensure it is plumb and level. Leave a small gap between the interlocking profile and the handle to prevent entrapment, then drill holes for the pegs, insert the stop, and secure it with the provided screw. Install wedge gaskets around all four sides of each panel from the inside, and along both interlocks from the outside.

Step 6 – Install the Outer Frame Track Cover Plates

Apply double-sided glazing tape along all three sides of the outer track. Position the track cover plate with the brush pile gasket facing the door. Secure the plate, then repeat the process for the other sides of the frame. Test the door to ensure smooth operation.

Finally, press the drainage hole cover caps into the pre-drilled holes on the outer frame of the bottom track. Your sliding patio door installation is now complete and ready for use!
